The Postmasburg–Kathu corridor hosts Sishen (Kumba Iron Ore — one of the world's largest open-pit iron ore mines) and Khumani (Assmang). Diamond mining is centred on Kimberley and surrounds, with De Beers operating underground and tailings operations. Augrabies and Namaqualand host alluvial diamond workings.
